Jolie’s relationship with her father is not sound and now she has estranged from him. Jolie couldn’t stand her father as she believes that he is responsible for the breakup of their family because he had a relationship outside his marriage. Though her father tried to make the relationship with her daughter normal and also appeared with her in "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.” Jolie indicated in 2004 that she does not want to take the relationship with her father any further. She was serious about her decision and her father claimed that she might be having serious emotional problems. That was the time when Jolie decided to drop her surname “Voight” legally and took the new name of Angelina Jolie.
How Acting Happened
When Jolie was a teenager, it was her dream to be a funeral director. At the age of eleven, she joined the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, while her former education was being conducted at the Beverly Hills High School. While she was acting in the film “Gia,” she was studying in a film school at New York University. However, she did not continue with her studies when ‘Gia’ was over.
‘Gia’- a remarkable Achievement
It was not that she directly entered into the films. Her career started as a model. Her first acting stint in a movie was in the film called ‘Hackers’ which was released in 1995. However, the biggest turning point in the career came in 1998. This was the year when a television film ‘Gia’ was released. The movie was based on the true story of a supermodel Gia Carangi who suffered death due to AIDS. Her role as Gia won her tremendous critical acclaim and she got prestigious awards such as Golden Satmifie, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe. She even got an ‘Emmy’ nomination for her portrayal in ‘Gia.’
A String of Flops and the Revival
Though she won tremendous critical acclaim and appreciation of viewers, her career was not a rosy picture. She had experienced several failures in the career back to back before 1999. After that phase her career was again resurrected. In 1999, she appeared with Denzel Washington in the movie, "The Bone Collector" and it became a huge success. Later, she worked in "Girl, Interrupted" and the performance was so tremendous that she won her Academy Awards for that role. She won Oscar in the category of Best Supporting Actress and the same movie also got her bag loaded with three Golden Globes. These movies were appreciated and some were successful, but she was yet to reach that super stardom. Angelina Jolie finally got her due with "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider". The movie was a blockbuster and marked the arrival of a super star called Angelina Jolie.
After the grand success of Tomb Raider, Jolie again worked in some movies, which failed to create an impact at the box office. Movies like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and "Alexander" did not performed well at the box office though the work of Jolie was appreciated. In the mean time, she also gave voice over to a popular animated movie called “Shark Tale.” The demand of Jolie never faded away and in 2005 “Mr. & Mrs. Smith" was released. She co-starred along with Brad Pitt in the movie and it was a grand success. The film did remarkable business at the box office and it resulted in a boost in the fee of Jolie. In her next project, Jolie earned around $15 million. The name of the movie was "The Good Shepherd" and it was released in 2006.
Apart from her acting career in the movies, Jolie used to be a professional model. She worked as a model in Los Angeles, New York and London and also made appearance in several music videos. Some of the popular music videos are with The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, and Meat Loaf.
Her personal life witnessed several ups and downs like her career. After the bitter relationship with her father, she was not lucky with her marriages. She was married to the actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, but got divorced. At present, she is in a steady relationship with Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt and there is a speculation that they may tie the knot. Her relationship with Brad enjoys tremendous media attention and they are even treated as a power couple. As they enjoy a tremendous brand value together, media has given them a new tag- “Brangelina.” Jolie’s relationship with Brad started in the sets of “Mr. And Mrs. Smith” and at that time Pitt was married to actress Jenifer Aniston. After Pitt and Aniston officially broke up, Jolie confirmed that she and Pitt are in a relation. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have adopted three children - Maddox, Zahara and Pax. She is also a mother of Shiloh, her biological child.
