Salman Taseer, the Governor of the Punjab province in Pakistan, was gunned down by his own body guard in a marketplace at Islamabad. This unnerving incident has created unrest in Pakistan.
The outspoken Punjab’s governor, Salman Taseer, was shot dead by his won
bodyguard on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. This shocking incident has created a
furor in Pakistan. The unnerving incident took place when the Governor of
Punjab, a province of Pakistan, had stepped out of his car at Islamabad’s Kohsar
market. The name of the assassin is Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, who belonged to
Punjab Elite Force and was entrusted with the duty of protecting Salman Taseer.
The assassin, Qadri
The killer Qadri confessed to the police moments after the heinous murder.
Qadri stated that the reason behind this abhorred act of killing the Punjab
Governor, the populous province of Punjab, is that the political leader had
called the Blasphemy Law as ‘black law’ and opposed it. The unabashed statement
that came from Qadri, moments after killing the renowned politician is that he
felt ‘proud’ to have killed a blasphemer. This is another case of a fanatic who
shot the governor almost nine times before dropping his weapon and surrendering
to the police. Mr.Tasser was rushed to the nearby hospital in Islamabad but
succumbed to the injuries on the way.
This shocking murder of the razor-tongued Governor has crippled Pakistan of
normalcy. It is a great blow for Pakistan and it is being just three years of
the high-profile assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007 who had been the leader
of Pakistan People’s Party. The news of the assassination of Punjab’s governor
became rife in minutes after the murder. Many people exhibited their grievance
and protested against the murder of Mr. Taseer by blocking traffic and burning
tyres. Such scenes were prevalent in Lahore and Multan as protests were rampant.
Taseer Was a Member of Pakistan People’s Party
The politician Taseer has been a senior member of Pakistan People’s Party.
The members of the party are yet to recover from the great loss and mourned for
the political leader. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, has
declared three days of national mourning. He has also ordered for immediate
investigation. The inquiry and investigation might reveal whether there is any
conspiracy or the heinous murder of Salman Taseer was the brainchild of someone
else and committed by Qadri.
Taseer Has Been Vocal About His Detest Against The Extremist Forces
The able politician has successfully used Twitter to spell out his
uncompromising views. He had been in the news very recently for publicly
supporting Aasia Bibi, a mother of three children who had been sentenced to
death for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad. Mr. Taseer made headlines by
appealing for the pardon of the Christian woman, Aasia Bibi. It put him into the
cauldron of controversy. He was risking his life by voicing his protest against
the extremist forces. His sharp comments when he termed the clerics as
‘illiterate’ and held them responsible for the religious decrees issued against
him in Pakistan. Salman Taseer never gave in to any kind of political or
religious pressure, led life in his own brash style. However, the dirty game
played with religion and politics took away the life of one of the most openly
progressive politicians of Pakistan.
